Beauty on a Budget: [Tosowoong] Enzyme Powder Wash Review

For today’s Holy Grail, I will be reviewing a cleanser. One that has straight out, kicked some products out of my regular routine, carving itself a place not only in my vanity, but also in my must haves. This item is a definite holy grail, but also so reasonably priced, that it will be part of the “beauty on a budget” category as well, being able to fit in most, if not all, beauty funds.

The past months, I have been experimenting more than usual by using different combinations of products and routines, in order to cleanse my skin. Those working on the beauty field, we hardly stick to one product only, having to try different products and techniques, even if many times this can be a road of trial an error. In my personal case I am always on the look out for the newest products, once I have narrowed down the ones that seem promising, I do tons of research on ingredients, skin and body overall health as well as different application methods for each product along with new skin care techniques. At times though, even among all the shine of all those new products, you might end up falling in love with an older item.

That is exactly what happened to me with [Tosowoong] enzyme powder wash, the product that I am going to be reviewing today. This face wash is not exactly a new product, but actually a fairly old one, which also does not come from an ultra famous brand. This might make many people not even aware of its existence or not very willing to try it, but let me tell you it would be a mistake not to, because it is a great product. A product able to solidify his place on my beauty routine for the last couple of months, which is not something that happens very often.

If you are doubting about trying this product out, do not hesitate and give it a go, it is a great product and on this article I will explain you why.

I would define Tosowoong´s enzyme powder wash, as a very gentle product that deep cleanses, without stripping. A daily wash that I look forward to use on my skin everyday, not only because of the way it makes my skin look right after, but specially because of the way it takes care of my skin and how it makes my skin feel.

If you are one of my readers, you already know that one of the biggest deals for me when talking about products, are ingredients. I read, research and look through most, if not all the ingredients of a product before buying it. As always, I will give you a list of the ingredients contained in this product, which might surprise you, since it is not one completely free of those ingredients that usually put up my red flags. Still, I decided to give it a try, and I will explain you further down why.

Ingredient list:

Zea mays (corn) starch, sodium lauroyl aspartate, sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium palmitate, sodium lauryl sulfate, titanium dioxide, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, methylparaben, alcohol denat, perfume, maltodextrin, papain, badger oil

As you can see on the former ingredient list, I have marked with bold letters those ingredients that I usually like to keep away of my beauty products. Thinking about it, they were most likely the reason why I did not try give this product a try, right when it came out a couple of years ago. Sulfates and perfume, are potential irritants, alcohol denat, a potentially very drying agent and parabens preservatives that have showed up in certain studies as potential ingredients triggering certain types of cancer.

So why did I decide to buy this product, if these are things that I usually take into consideration? Well “potential” was the key, a couple of years ago I was very obsessed with the ingredients and the possibility of those ingredients, being bad for the health and the skin, meaning I would directly cross out most products if containing any of the ones I considered “negative”.

Nowadays after much more research, even more trial and error and a lot of learning, I have come to realize that of course ingredients are very important, but most important is the way those ingredients are worked into the formula, to make a stable and healthy product. At times even natural ingredients, which I used to be a super advocate for, can be even more damaging than ingredients created in a laboratory. So for me, nowadays even if I still pay attention to what goes into my skin and body, I pay even more attention to the way those ingredients or products are made, combined and stabilized.

On this product the first and main ingredient is a very great and powerful one, originating from corn starch and happening to be a great skin protectant, if we add the fact that all “negative ingredients” are towards the end of the list, and the fact that the cleanser itself has a great PH level to maintain the skin barriers integrity, together with having read reviews about its performance, made me to still want to give it a go. Also coming the product comes in a powder form, yes you read well, powder form, that making it very easy to foam and super hygienic, it happened to be the perfect item to buy for when I was traveling, little did I know it will be the one I would be using at home too.

In terms of performance:

After starting to use this product I have seen a tremendous difference in my skin texture, not only on the way my skin looks and feels, but also any existing acne and skin tone. As I have mentioned before I have very sensitive skin, acne and irritation prone, extremely dehydrated skin and even though my skin might not look bad for many, my biggest concerns are probably its texture and redness.

Because of being very pale and having sensitive skin my face gets red very easily, and any kind of spot, scratch or skin irritation can leave pigmentation marks later on. Due to my teenage acne, which you can read about in here, I have larger pores than I would like to, most of them scaring from old acne and having acne prone skin that gets clog easily a good cleanser is fundamental, to not develop impurities and keep a nice surface.

The enzyme wash, has been the perfect one to target all that. Being such a soft product on the skin, I have been able to deep cleanse my skin every day, even sometimes twice if needed, with no irritation, helping improve my over all skin appearance without compromising my skin barrier. By keeping my skin clean, while also strong and healthy, it has been improving and glowing more every day.

About the product:

Tosowoong´s enzyme powder wash is a low PH cleanser, that will cleanse your skin throughly without irritation, which is a very important fact in a daily cleanser, (if you want to know about PH levels and why is it important to keep your skin barrier healthy, have a look at my previous article on this matter). Being low PH and cleaning without stripping your skin, might seem like a very simple thing to accomplish, yet most cleaners will make your skin squeaky clean, by striping all of your natural oils. This sensation of “cleanliness” might be something that you enjoy, but that I advice you kick out of your routine as soon as possible. Stripping your skin from its natural oils, is not only very harsh on the skin, but also messes up its functions and balance, creating further problems than those we originally wanted to solve. For that reason when you look for a cleanser you want to go for one that has the perfect levels of acidity, to cleanse while protecting your skin. A cleanser with which you will not feel your skin, overly dry after its use.

That is one of the things I adore the most about this product, it foams up very well onto the hands, so you are already skipping the pulling on the face, not only that but it also lathers beautifully while gliding it across the face with your hands or any brush, of course I use it with my Luna, but bare hands work just as good. Besides that, here comes the best part, your face will look brighter, more decongested and clean without the irritation, the dryness or the pulling. The product, together with your skin after the wash, will feel soft and moist, almost buttery. Making your freshly washed face the perfect canvas for the products coming next, without needing to balance your skin out with extra products, being your skin already on a neutral PH. Meaning you can already start with all your later steps, such as toning, treating and moisturizing, giving goodness to the skin instead of having to fix it from any previous damage.

How to use:

Pour a small amount on slightly wet hands and softly rub together until it foams, I like to apply it, on an already slightly wet face and work with it adding water slowly if needed. Taking the opportunity to massage and detox the skin while I cleanse.

A little goes a long way and with just a pea size amount, you will have enough to cleanse face and neck. Pro tip: Once A week I also wash my body with another small amount of product, my skin has never looked softer.

Low PH, that protects the skin´s barrier.

Makes my skin feel and look great.

Non stripping, respective with sensitive skin.

Very, very, very hygienic, with a dry format and a good pouring mechanism.

Great for traveling and easy to move to a smaller container.

Being solid, less prompt to making messes on clothes, bathroom, purses.

It lasts quite a while, a little goes a long way.

Awesome price.

Some ingredients are not my favourites.

The packaging is not very aesthetically pleasing, but we can live.

The smell is a bit strong, not exactly in a bad way. More like in between a floral scent and a laundry detergent, which some people like me, might not fully enjoy, or might even be a bit scared of using at first, but do not worry it is very mild on the skin.

You have to be careful and wash it well, since it is so buttery you might easily leave residue on your face, without realizing and messing up the rest of your product application afterwards, which has happened to me more than once.

I will give it a 4.7/5 stars in overall performance, price vs quality, and product in general.

Would I repurchase?

An affordable product, that respects the skin´s PH levels, leaves your skin soft and helps you detox your skin while keeping it hydrated. Yes, without a doubt.

Where to buy?

I am sure you can buy the product from a lot of places like amazon, the company´s webpage and many Korean beauty supply stores. I happened to buy mine on Gmarket. The price might vary from one retailer to another, but a price in between 8$ and 12$ will be the average you might find .
